Top airline apps including American Airlines, Delta, Southwest, United and Spirit grew usage 36% year-on-year, according to new data from Sensor Tower.

Their combined MAUS were 9.4 million, up from 7 million in May 2021.

The uptick doesn’t come as much of a surprise as travel recovers from the pandemic.

However, apps still grew 24% compared to 7.6 million in May 2019, which shows that users are increasingly using their mobile devices to arrange flight bookings.

Meanwhile, travel booking apps in the US including Booking.com, Expedia and Priceline grew 19% to 15.8 million MAUs this year, up from 13.3 million last year.

Travel booking apps saw steep declines during 2020 and are slowly recovering, up 93% over 2020.

But usage isn’t quite what it used to be compared to 2019 which may be due to other apps such as Airbnb and Vrbo extending their user bases, up 76% in May 2022.
